Stanford Blood Center (SBC) has received FDA approval under a Biologics License Application (BLA) to manufacture and distribute high-titer COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) nationwide. SBC is the first blood center in California and only the second in the United States to achieve this milestone.
This full licensure replaces the previous Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) and ensures continued access to a proven treatment for immunocompromised patients at risk of severe COVID-19.
SBC has been at the forefront of CCP collection and research since early in the COVID-19 pandemic. With this licensure, SBC continues to advance transfusion medicine by ensuring a reliable national supply of high-titer CCP for patients in need.
Clinical Background and Efficacy
Clinical studies, including multiple randomized controlled trials, have shown that high-titer CCP is safe and effective in improving outcomes and reducing mortality among immunocompromised COVID-19 patients, both inpatient and outpatient.
